Crop residue management

Processing crop residue after harvest is important for several reasons. Crop residue is a great source of organic matter that can enhance soil structures, therefore, it is important that the residue is dealt with in an appropriate manner. Crop residue may be unevenly spread, which aggravates soil cultivation, and the encourage facilitate the spread of diseases and breeding of pests. Crop residue management can be done using the STRIEGEL-PRO straw harrow, or MULCHER.

CEREAL CROP RESIDUE MANAGEMENT

The amount of above ground biomass, in the form of straw, increases with the growing grain yields. The straw can either be baled after harvest, or chopped and spread in the field with a combine harvester during harvest. In the latter case, it is necessary to spread the crop residue evenly along the entire width of the cutter bar to avoid the formation of clusters around the crusher.

EVEN CROP RESIDUE DISTRIBUTION IS THE FOUNDATION

Even distribution of straw and crop residue can be achieved using the STRIEGEL-PRO straw harrow that also processes soil up to a depth of 1.6 inches when passing across the field, thus creating ideal conditions for the growth of leftover cereal seeds. If the combine harvester leaves taller stubble behind, the MULCHER machine can be used to shorten the stubble field, break the stalks and distribute them evenly.

OILSEED RAPE CROP RESIDUE MANAGEMENT

The STRIEGEL‑PRO straw harrow, equipped with cutting coulters, is ideal for a stubble field with desiccated oilseed rape crop. The front coulters cut up dry oilseed rape parts, and straw harrow evenly distributes them along the field. The leftover rape seeds immediately start growing – the coulters finely crumble the soil, the straw harrow mixes the small rape seeds with soil and they start germinating. Their subsequent destruction is effective, low cost and fast, covering the whole area.

A mulching machine has to be used in a stubble field after oilseed rape that has not been desiccated. It chops and mulches the resistant crop residue and distributes it evenly all over the field.

MULCHING AS A TOOL OF MECHANICAL ELIMINATION

Cultivating soil after maize harvest, namely grain maize, is often difficult, and crop residue management plays an irreplaceable role here. Using the MULCHER machine reduces crop residue to the optimal size of 1.2-2 inches, accelerates the decomposition process, and facilitates its incorporation into soil.

LANDSCAPE, MEADOW AND PASTURE MAINTENANCE

Mulching has an irreplaceable role in landscaping and maintaining meadows and pastures in terms of regulating weeds, seeding of woods, or promoting grass offsetting and maintaining the quality of fodder.
Weeds usually get to the field from untreated edges, therefore, the edges should also be managed to prevent spreading into the field. Mulching is also important for the formation of fodder of the same quality in pastures where mulching helps thicken the vegetation, improves grass offsetting, and eliminates the old, ungrazed grass.
