Strip-till seeding with the MATADOR MO seed drill

Strip-till is a modern technology that combines the agronomic advantages of tilled soil in strips with the protection of soil structure in the mid rows. The key is targeted, zonal loosening of the soil only in the area of future seeding and subsequent consolidation. In practice, this means better conditions for germination and root growth, more efficient water and nutrient management, and a lower risk of soil deterioration. The MATADOR MO strip-till seed drill takes this technology even further by allowing tillage, fertiliser placement and seeding in a single pass.

Why strip tillage accelerates crop emergence

At the place where the seeds are drilled, it is necessary to create an environment that promotes rapid crop emergence. Strip tillage ensures sufficient air supply, which contributes to faster soil warming and more dynamic germination. The result is faster development of germinating plants and more uniform emergence. At the same time, optimal loosening and reliable consolidation stabilise the seed bed so that it has a suitable structure for seed-soil contact and subsequent water uptake.

Sufficient water in the root zone

Strip tillage promotes rapid infiltration of rainwater into the future root zone. Water stored deeper is less lost through evaporation at the beginning of vegetation, which is especially important in periods of irregular rainfall. At the same time, the soil structure in the untilled zone remains stable. Capillarity is preserved, and with it the ability of water to rise from the lower layers, which the vegetation will use in later stages of growth.

Stronger roots

The loosened strip under the crop row promotes root penetration into the depth. A well-developed root system makes it easier for the plant to survive stressful conditions such as frost or drought. In addition, it improves the stability of the vegetation and its ability to draw water and nutrients throughout the growing season.

Targeted fertiliser placement

A major advantage of strip-till is that rainwater movement in the loosened zone is directed towards the placed fertiliser. This results in faster dissolution and the transfer of nutrients into the soil solution, where they are immediately available to plants. The combination of available water and nutrients creates an attractive growth zone for roots and increases nutrient utilisation, especially in the early growth stages when yield potential is determined.

One pass = less compaction, fewer risks, higher efficiency

Repeated passes by machinery are one of the main causes of soil compaction and gradual soil deterioration. If tillage, fertiliser placement and seeding are carried out in several separate operations, not only does the consumption of time and fuel increase, but so does the risk of soil damage. MATADOR MO allows these steps to be carried out in a single pass, reducing the number of entries into the field and limiting pressure on the soil profile. This is a significant benefit from both an agronomic and economic point of view. Work is more efficient, soil structure is more stable and the risk of yield loss is lower.

Protection against erosion and a more gentle approach to soil life

Another advantage of strip-till is that the soil between the strips remains minimally disturbed. With the right choice of working tools (e.g. narrower tines and larger spacing), more plant residues can be left on the surface, which reduces erosion risks and helps protect the soil from direct rainfall and drying out. Differentiated tillage targeted only at rows simultaneously reduces the negative impact of intensive loosening on the soil edaphon, slows down the degradation of organic matter and reduces unnecessary CO₂ losses.

MATADOR MO as a tool for modern farming

Strip-till is not just a different way of tilling the soil, it is a comprehensive system of managing soil water, soil structure and nutrients. The MATADOR MO strip-till seed drill brings a key element to this system: the integration of operations so that strip preparation, targeted fertiliser placement and seeding are carried out accurately and efficiently. The result is faster crop establishment, better use of water and nutrients, and a more soil-friendly approach that also reduces operating costs.

If you are looking for technology that combines performance, agronomic logic and long-term soil protection, strip-till with MATADOR MO is a solution that makes sense in dry years as well as under normal conditions.
